Progress Report 3/12/17 - 52 Minis Week 10

This week was spring break. I had hoped to get lots of painting done but it turned out to be a very busy week of work and my evenings filled up with other activities. I managed to get a little bit of painting done but it was just finishing up some Nurgle models I had yet to complete.

It's the first day of Spring and this lot is bringing things back to life... in the Nurgle way!

The herald. Bringing back the funk with his collection of bells, guts, and mummified heads!

His back  up band leaders, aka the command group. Heads a plenty!

Roadies. Can't they just clean up their act a bit? This puts my total at something like 20.

And a group shot just for fun. They look gross, funny, and monstrous which is pretty much exactly what I wanted. The bases are not 100% finished and I have yet to add the final goo and gore which will come after I seal them up. Thinking about playing some form of Nurgle in a local escalation/narrative campaign in the works so I figured it was time to crank these guys out.

Progress Report - Augulyst mega-update part 1.

Been slacking! Many things have happened since I last updated and I figured I should try and capture as much as possible here for historical reasons if nothing else...

First up I did manage to finish painting my big guys for the 750pt 40k tournament and I managed to play three games without messing up too much! I think I even won a couple games and tied another. Here are a few highlights:

Turns out charging this thing wasn't the best idea. Also I forgot to make attacks from the riders!
My Soul Grinder thinking about leaving a nice pile of phlegm on some IG armor.
Game 1 was vs Imperial Guard with a lot of armor (not shocking). Not the most "friendly" list but the forces of Nurgle remained triumphant and nearly tabled the IG (who forfeit on the second to last turn). In this game I learned the importance of cover saves, barrage weapons, close combat with vehicles, and that my Nurgle Daemon Prince was a nice slice of (moldy) cheese.

Flies getting ready to be blasted off the table by martians.
Nurglings holding down the objective and hiding from 5+ snap shots!
Daemon Prince deciding how best to get over to the enemy HQ with so much anti-air in play.
Second match of the day was against Skitarii (Adeptus Mechanius). Really fun game though we didn't finish as it was both of our second games at 750 pts and we had to look up a lot of rules. Plus the Skitarii have some pretty cool special rules. I like the look of them. Must resist....

Plaguebearers and Herald thinking about leaving the battlefield after seeing all of the guns.
Fly power take 3? This time let's swarm the Tau assault team and their special character choice!
As you can guess that didn't go so well...
Final game of the day was against the Tau. Plenty of fire support, armor, and GUNS oh my. First few turns saw most of the Daemons blasted off the board before the Tau got aggressive with objectives and fell right into the Daemon Prince trap. NOM NOM he ate them all in about 3 turns. Win?!?

For those who are wondering here is the list I brought to the event:

HQ (300)
Daemon Prince
- Mark of Nurgle
- Daemonic Flight
- Greater Reward

Herald of Nurgle
- Lesser Loci: Virulency
- Psyker (Mastery Level 1)

TROOPS (144)
Plaguebearers x 11
Nurglings x 3

FAST ATTACK (126)
Plague Drones x 3

HEAVY SUPPORT (180)
Soul Grinder
- Mark of Nurgle
- Phlegm Bombardment

Our 1,000 point escalation event was this past weekend but I wasn't able to attend. The only thing I added to get from 750 to 1,000 was a Great Unclean One w/ Greater Reward and Psyker lvl 2. Kept the Daemon Prince as a Heavy Support choice and added a psyker level 1 to him. Filth!? Beyond 1,000 I am thinking more troops, maybe some cultists, and Beasts of Nurgle.

By the way here is the mini I am using for my Great Unclean One... the glorious Glottkin!

Here is assembled with a start on the basecoats. He comes with his brothers of course but I wanted to have the option of leaving them off so I simply magnetized them and made bases for them to live on when they aren't riding their big brother around.

And I did manage to paint up a few Nurglings and Nurgling bases/objective markers as well. I think I forgot to put their WIP photos up here as I was working on them (I threw in a few WIP of the Daemon Prince too for good measure)!

Playing on a gross "not dick" growth is a favorite past time of all Nurglings... or so they tell me.

Can't beat a little shower from the tentacle pit to get your day going Nurgle style!

And here they are with some paint on them. Still need to seal them and add the final disgusting details.

It's a bird? A spewing mouth? A gut faced goon? Hell whatever it is you don't really want to get into Close Combat with it I can tell you from experience.

That's it for the 40k side of things! Check back for part 2 where I detail the current state of Blood Bowlness and my plans for Chaos Cup 2016!

Progress Report 4/16/16 - Getting sloppy.

Slogging along through the priming and pre-painting stage of these Nurgle dudes. Feeling pretty good about where they are at now and wanted to share my test model.

Started off with some simple basecoats and slight washes/highlights to get the solid funk going on.

Added some additional details and highlight and I am feeling pretty good about the results on this test model. Still need to finish a few details and the base of course but not bad for a rank and file troop. Might get more gribbly later on...

Also spent some time last weekend playing two games of TNT with a local player at the FLGS. My Raiders vs his Caravaneers. Both games went to the Raiders (Skullkrushas) but they were close fough affairs with the Raiders being outgunned in every situation but still making it in to crush heads.

First game was A Little Slice of Heaven with the Raiders bringing it to the Caravan's hideout in the middle of the night while some of their group were away or asleep. The Caravan had a very well defended position and lots of shooting to keep the Skullkrushas at bay so a bit of tactical approach was needed to keep them safe.

After a daring run in approach and deftly dodging most of the incoming fire the Raiders caught up with the Caravan forces and beat them off of the objective to claim the win. Groin (pictured at the top) was extremely lucky and survived 6 rounds of close range blasts from a large caliber shotgun before crushing the head of the Caravan guard holding the high ground.

The second match was a race for a water supply in a nearby rusted out water container set in the center of the board. Both forces held occupied positions around the outskirts of the supply but again the Caravan brought the big guns and outgunned the Raiders for most of the encounter. The Skullkrushas did manage to bring on a Flamethrower and Assault Rifle to help even the playing field a bit and the Raider leader also brought a compound bow which he used to Rambo off a few of the guards on his way towards the objective.

Floyd the mutant tried desperately to punch a whole in the water container before the Caravan shoots him to death (he failed to do either).

Another two great games of TNT and I just fall in love with this game more every time I play it. A lot of luck helped keep the Raiders safe but we all know luck can't last forever out there in the wasteland...

Progress Report 4/9/16 - Lumbering along...

Slow and steady wins something or so I hear? I've been spending a few minutes each day working on assembling, converting, and basing my Nurgle force. Thought it would be a good time to share my progress...

First up... a few more Plaguebearers! You can see what my basing looks like on the other models which didn't have this done when I posted my last update.  I wanted it to look as if the ground was erupting in slime, rot, and giant grubs/maggots wherever the Nurgle fellas went. I think it looks gross. A couple small conversions in this bunch including the musician with bits from the Drone kit.

Speaking of conversions here is my pile of Nurglings I made out of the extra ones found on the sprues from the starter box. Doesn't look identical but I am okay with that. I didn't feel like sculpting a bunch of little faces in the middle so I went with a big dung heap instead. Some closeups below:

I took one of the Plaguebearers from the basic box and converted him into another Herald for my force using bits leftover from the Blight Kings sprues. I'm really digging the way it turned out!

I pictured him as somewhere between life as a Warrior of Chaos and Nurgle Daemonhood. I have enough bits to make another 1 or 2 Blight Kings with some more full on sculpting and perhaps I will get around to it once I see how they do on the tabletop.

And speaking of Blight King types here is Gutrot Spume who will most likely fill the roll of a Blight King in games where named characters aren't welcome.

Really cool kit that was easy to put together. Actually all of the newer Nurgle kits have been very easy to slap together with minimal gaps and filling needed.

And last but not least the first of two big monstrous buddies I have to add...

Just finished the main assembly of this big gribbly last night and I still have some filling and small additions and alterations to take care of. I plan on using this mostly as Daemonspew though I put the Bloab Rotspawned body on him. I didn't like the static swarm of flies or the static stream of vomit so I left those out. I added a nice fleshy appendage/mouth bursting out of his back and the big guy will have a big nasty tongue. Going to do the base up with a big puddle of slimy ooze and of course some giant grubs/maggots to go along with it.

Thinking about what I can add to this force to make it something I could use in 40k if the whim and wind strikes me that way. I have lots of Chaos Spawns sitting around there and might make some Nurgle Spawns/Beasts of Nurgle with those. Also have some Chaos Warriors and Chaos Knights I am considering adding with a Nurgle touch. And of course a Great Unclean One would be fun... but next up we have this guy!

Mr tons o' fun himself... the Glottkin! Really looking forward to painting all of this stuff up and hopefully will be able to get some priming done this week... if it would stop snowing in April!!!
